The statue is located in front of the Narmada Dam, 3.2 km away on the river island called Sadhu Bet near Rajpipla in Gujarat The monument along with its surroundings occupies more than 20,000 square meters and is surrounded by a 12 square kilometer artificial lake.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on October 31, 2013. 9. Common people from all over India contributed about 135 metric tons of iron for use in the project. An engineering marvel, the construction of the Statue of Unity was completed in a record time of 33 months.
It was built by Larsen & Toubro Ltd for Rs 2989 crore. The Statue of Unity is made up of 1,700 tons of bronze and 1,850 tons of bronze cladding on the outside, while the interior of the statue is filled with cement concrete (180,000 cubic meters), reinforced steel (18,500 tons), and structured steel.
